Tributes were today being paid to a long-serving councillor and former mayoress of Walsall who passed away at home at the weekend, aged 79. Councillor Joan Barton was Mayoress from 1990 – 1991 when her husband, former Councillor Malcolm Barton, was Mayor.
A serving member of Walsall Council, she had represented Birchills Leamore for Labour since May 1998, and before joining the council was a veteran Labour party member working tirelessly behind the scenes and holding numerous executive posts.
Mr Barton, who himself served on Walsall Council for 32 years, said his wife passed away at the couple’s Remington Road home, on the Beechdale Estate, where they had lived since 1961, on Saturday.
Council leader Mike Bird said: “Everyone at Walsall was very sad to hear the news. Our thoughts are very much with her family at this difficult time.”
Current Mayor Councillor Garry Perry said: ““I would like to add my sincerest condolences to her family and friends .
“Joan was elected to the council on the same day as me, and was a very valued member of the council. People still have fond memories of her year as Mayoress.”
Funeral arrangements will be confirmed in the next few days.
